Next-Generation Heroin Identification for TacticID

Newark, DE, November 11, 2015

B&W Tek, an advanced mobile instrumentation company that delivers lab quality Raman spectroscopy solutions through user-friendly mobile platforms, is proud to announce that their award-winning TacticID handheld spectrometer now has the proven capability to identify street heroin samples.

The TacticID system has the industry’s largest on-board library of narcotics, pharmaceutical materials and cutting agents along with thousands of hazardous and common chemicals, explosives, and more. The system delivers fast and accurate on-site identification of unknown substances in seconds with clear warning signals and safety information.

The new TacPac™ accessory for the TacticID system is a custom adaptor that can be used with of SERS (Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy) consumables. The SERS consumables utilize a commonly available solvent and isolate the heroin sample, enabling the 785nm TacticID device to identify heroin and its components quickly and easily. It is known that conventional 785nm Raman spectrometers are challenged by fluorescence that is inherent to certain specific samples. Due to the high fluorescence in most heroin street samples, many handheld devices alone have had difficulty with accurate identification of heroin, especially in mixed samples, without the help from other technologies.

In the United States and around the world, the abuse of heroin is a fast-moving epidemic. In the United States alone, usage jumped more than 63% between 2002 and 2015, with increases seen among men and women, most age groups, and all income levels. The biggest increases have occurred in groups with historically lower rates of heroin use, including women and people with private insurance and higher incomes. As heroin use has increased, so have heroin-related deaths. From 2002 through 2015, the rate of heroin-related overdose deaths has quadrupled.

With the release of the new TacPac identification kit for TacticID, law enforcement agencies around the world now have a new tool to fight this ever-growing threat. B&W Tek is proud to contribute products that further help fight to make our world a safer, more secure place.

TacticID Utilized in Emerging Asia Synthetic Rice Crisis

Newark, DE, July 8, 2015

B&W Tek, Inc., an advanced instrumentation company that delivers lab quality Raman spectroscopy solutions through user-friendly mobile platforms is proud to announce that their award-winning TacticID-GP handheld spectrometer has been utilized by a Philippine federal safety agency as a critical safety tool for the identification of plastic rice – a quickly emerging problem across Asia.

The TacticID-GP system has an on-board library of thousands of hazardous and common chemicals, explosives, narcotics, pharmaceutical drugs and more – including many polymers. The system delivers fast, accurate, on-site identification of unknown substances in seconds with clear warning signals and safety information. The instrument can scan directly through clear packaging bags containing food products such as rice.

Rice has long been a staple in nearly all Asian cultures, but consumption of rice has taken a potentially lethal turn in the last several months. Confirmed in countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, India and Vietnam, the emergence of plastic resin-based synthetic rice is causing serious health concerns. If ingested, the synthetic rice can cause internal digestive complications and is potentially lethal in large quantities.

In late July 2015, the TacticID-GP was tested by a Philippine federal safety agency in an effort to rapidly identify authentic rice from fake rice. The system quickly and clearly identified real rice as ‘Starch’ with a green ‘all clear’ background screen and the fake rice as ‘Styrene Acrylonitrile Copolymer’ with a yellow background warning screen. Interest in TacticID-GP since this evaluation has increased across much of Asia for this application.

B&W Tek, Inc. is excited to be able to deliver tools to various Asian safety agencies that provide a means to increase safety and stay one step ahead of illegal and dangerous food contaminations.

TacticID-GP Excels During CBRNe World Explosives Testing Evaluation

Newark, DE, July 8, 2015

B&W Tek, Inc., an advanced instrumentation company that delivers lab quality Raman spectroscopy solutions through user-friendly mobile platforms is proud to announce that their TacticID-GP system received highly favorable independent evaluation results regarding the system’s explosives identification capabilities.

TacticID-GP is a handheld Raman spectrometer that is used by bomb squads, hazardous material teams, global law enforcement personnel, military and similar end users, to quickly and accurately identify unknown substances directly at the point of need. The system contains thousands of on board library items, advanced Wi-Fi capabilities, customizable libraries and much more.

In collaboration with Cranfield University in the United Kingdom, B&W Tek work with CBRNe World on an independent testing and evaluation of the TacticID handheld Raman analyzer and its ability to identify explosive substances.

The evaluation was performed at a UK Ministry of Defense explosives range which is part of prestigious Cranfield University. Greg Giuntini, Global Product Manager of Safety and Security Products at B&W Tek, worked closely with Andrew Johnston, an Explosives Research Scientist, to create the battery of testing in a controlled environment.

Explosives such as C4, TNT, RDX and PETN were successfully identified in generally less than 8 seconds, with detection limits as low as 0.2 grams. Ammonium Nitrate and other common explosive ingredients were also able to be identified very quickly with repeated accuracy at similarly low quantities. As a first for tested Raman handheld systems, the TacticID was able to identify the powerful TATB explosive with 100% accuracy. It was also noted that TacticID delivered accurate scan results faster than any other handheld Raman system that had previously gone through this testing.

The TacticID proved itself to be a cutting edge tool that can deliver accurate and critical explosives information to an end user in mere seconds. This recent testing reaffirms that TacticID is the proven explosives identification tool of choice for bomb squads, EOD users, hazardous material technicians and more.

TacticID-GP Aids in the Fight Against ‘One Pot’ Meth

Newark, DE, December 9, 2014

B&W Tek, Inc., an advanced instrumentation company that delivers lab quality Raman spectroscopy solutions through user-friendly mobile platforms, is pleased to announce that the TacticID-GP has been used successfully by the United States DEA in ‘One Pot’ meth lab remediation.

A rapid new movement of simple, easy-to-make methamphetamine called the ‘One Pot’ method is sweeping the country. This new method is designed to get around laws restricting the sale of ingredients needed to make meth and is spreading in popularity at a rapid rate. This process is even more dangerous than the old makeshift meth labs, with numerous deaths and injuries reported around the world.

Cooks using the ‘One Pot’ method combine all of the ingredients into a single 2 liter coke bottle, Gatorade bottle or similar container. If the bottle is not ‘burped’ every 15 minutes or so, enough pressure can build up due to the chemical reaction that a violent explosion of flaming, toxic ingredients will occur. The process for making this ‘One Pot’ methamphetamine can be as short as 1 hour, can be performed almost anywhere, and yields several grams of highly pure meth.

The TacticID-GP handheld Raman spectrometer is ideal for hazardous material teams, law enforcement and other responders for fast, accurate identification of methamphetamine ingredients and precursors in the ‘One Pot’ method. It is able to scan directly through clear bottles, plastics and more, enabling responders to obtain identifications without direct contact. Limiting exposure for safety personnel is critical for making ‘One Pot’ lab remediation as safe as possible for all involved. The TacticID-GP has been used extensively with national law enforcement on-site to identify ingredients within these meth-making bottles. First responders have praised the system’s rapid identification, in-depth mixture analysis and multiple sampling accessories – all of which are making their lives safer and easier. The faster critical information can be passed to responders, the faster and safer these situations can be successfully resolved.

With its large on-board library of chemicals, narcotics and explosives, along with color-coded warning systems, Wi-Fi remote operation, multiple sampling accessories and more, TacticID-GP has proven to be an invaluable tool for those on the forefront of this disturbing new narcotic manufacturing front.

TacticID-N™ Used to ID Illegal Mixed Street Tablets as Part of Joint Federal Task Force Take Downs

Newark, DE, October 3, 2014

B&W Tek, Inc., an advanced instrumentation company that delivers lab quality Raman spectroscopy solutions through user-friendly mobile platforms, is pleased to announce that our newest handheld Raman system, the TacticID-N, has recently received some exceptional praise from a United States federal law enforcement agency.

With the largest library of narcotics, pills, cutting agents and precursors in the industry, the TacticID-N is changing the face of on-scene narcotics identification for our nation’s top law enforcement personnel.

In late September, the TacticID-N was successfully used in several high profile drug manufacturing operation mitigations in the greater Boston area. Top US federal law enforcement personnel with a combined task force of state and local police departments, utilized TacticID-N for the on-scene identification of various Percocet and cutting agent pills as part of a large scale illegal drug manufacturing bust.

The first case involved an operation producing illegal Percocet pills with the intent of distribution on a large scale. The Percocet 30mg were being cut and mixed with common cutting agents such as acetaminophen and baby powder, re-cut, re-formed and illegally sold as prescription grade name-brand Percocet tablets. The TacticID-N was used to positively identify the pills containing Percocet and exactly which cutting agents were in each pill.

The second case involved a raid of a facility manufacturing Oxymorphone (a US Schedule II prescription pain killer) tablets mixed with over-the-counter Tylenol. The narcotics pills were being cleverly mixed in with actual Tylenol tablets and distributed using Tylenol brand used containers to ship the product out of the area. Only certain containers actually contained the narcotic tablets, while others were all actual acetaminophen as a means to mask the operation.

The TacticID-N was used in over 50 identifications to quickly sort which containers were pure acetaminophen and which contained the Oxymorphone mixed tablets.

Unlike competitive instruments available, the TacticID-N features robust chemometric mixture analysis capable of delivering up to 10 components of a mixed street sample. In both cases, not only was the TacticID-N able to positively identify tablets containing Percocet and Oxymorphone, the instrument was also able to identify all cutting agents present, offering law enforcement personnel insight into the manufacturing processes used by the illegal operations. This type of complex mixture analysis information allows federal agencies to gather manufacturing trends on a regional level, and by extent, the larger north east US drug market.

TacticID-N continues to be an invaluable tool for all levels of law enforcement and is quickly garnering a reputation in the industry as the ‘king of mixture analysis’. We look forward to continue helping law enforcement agencies globally in the ongoing fight against illegal drug and narcotic manufacturing.
